Today I’ve been disconnected from the hard cried-for pain relief (aka “the magic button”), saline, catheter and cannula! I’m not completely liberated, though, as I’m still plugged in to surgical drains or, more correctly, they’re plugged into me. Drains are put in to the surgical site during surgery. I have three: two in the abdomen and one in the breast. A rubber tube drains fluid from the surgical site into a bag. The amount of fluid is monitored by the nurses as a measure for wound healing. Sure, at first they’re as icky as they sound, but better out than in as they say!
